With a tailor-made design using Shopify online shops, foodspring was able to prepare for international expansion and the development of new markets.

  • The initial situation

    Foodspring is one of Germany's fastest-growing and most innovative food startups. Founded in 2013 by Tobias Schüle and Philipp Schrempp together with their partner ECONA AG, Foodspring aims to make functional nutrition accessible to everyone. With an international team of 180 employees and deliveries to 17 countries worldwide, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, and Spain, Foodspring is a leader in the production of premium functional food. Since 2019, Foodspring has been part of Mars Edge, a subsidiary of the Mars chocolate bar company.

  • The challenge

    Until then, Foodspring had developed its own online shops in-house. However, international expansion required the use of Shopify to meet its ambitious goals and plans. The challenge was to quickly integrate a new shop system, a modular template logic, and a new IT infrastructure without jeopardizing existing content and SEO rankings. Furthermore, a new market expansion team had to quickly learn and implement corporate, market, and shop logic.

  • The solution approach

    To overcome these challenges, Foodspring turned to tante-e, one of the leading Shopify Plus agencies in German-speaking countries. Tante-e supported Foodspring in translating the existing design into Shopify Plus logic and modules, defining and standardizing product templates, and programming a customized design on Shopify Plus. In addition to advising on the right tool stack for Shopify Plus, tante-e also ensured that the company's existing systems and processes, as well as those of its partners, were aligned and integrated with the new online store environment.

The implementation

Incorporation of thematic worlds

Targeted entry points to dedicated thematic worlds were incorporated into the homepage. These led customers to specific landing pages that presented a mix of products, recipes, and content articles around a specific topic, such as muscle building or fat burning.

Development of various product page templates

To optimize the product presentation, various product page templates were developed and programmed. These included standard product page templates without variants, product page templates with various variants, and a custom product set page template. These templates offered maximum flexibility and enabled customized product presentation.

Integration of storytelling

A lot of space was deliberately created for storytelling and content on the product pages. Metafields were used to present Foodspring's offerings in a visually appealing and unique way. This enabled Foodspring's brand messages to be communicated effectively and encouraged customer engagement.

Content integration

The existing content and WordPress blog were carefully integrated into the new shop. The existing systems were used to seamlessly feed the content into the shop, ensuring a consistent user experience.

Defining a specific tool stack

To support Foodspring's international expansion plans, a specific tool stack was defined and implemented. This tool stack was designed to meet international requirements and avoid unexpected surprises in day-to-day operations.

The results

Within a few months, an optimized setup on Shopify Plus was defined and implemented. A customized design was implemented that could be optimally used by the team. Furthermore, a new mindset was introduced to the team, enabling the use of standardized processes and product content structures.

Lessons Learned

The implementation of the project demonstrated that even an ambitious timeline can be achieved in a short period of time when the right people work hand in hand. It has been demonstrated that Shopify Plus can be successfully integrated into larger companies and more complex existing IT infrastructures. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that market entry or international expansion can be the perfect use case for testing Shopify Plus within your own company and gaining initial experience.
