When you create a new Shopify store, it is initially password-protected. This means customers must first log in to view products and place orders.
Once you've finished setting up your online store, you should deactivate the password so that visitors aren't faced with a virtually locked door. How can you remove, change, or add your Shopify store's password? We'll show you how in our guide.

Our e-commerce expert Adrian has already helped numerous brands launch on Shopify. In his book, Shopify for Dummies, he provides retailers with all the essential information they need to navigate Shopify ( view on Amazon / view at your local bookstore ).
1. What is the purpose of password protection in Shopify stores?
Assigning a password is ideal if you're still working on setting up your website. It can also be useful for maintenance and renovation work to temporarily protect your online store with a password.
This way, only users who know the password, such as employees or developers, can access the content of your storefront.
The password that protects your Shopify store is independent of the password you use to log in to the administration area.
2. Remove your Shopify store password - How to do it
There are basically two ways you can deactivate the password from your Shopify store.
2.1. Deactivate password via themes
-
In the admin area, navigate to Sales Channels -> Online Store -> Themes.
-
If your shop is password protected, an information banner will often appear in this area.
-
You can deactivate the password there with one click.
However, this notice does not always appear, so there is an alternative way
2.2. Deactivate password via configurations
-
In the admin area, navigate to Online Shop -> Configurations.
-
There you will find the “Password Protection” section.
-
Uncheck “Restrict access to visitors with a password” and then save.
Conversely, you can check the box again if you want to protect your Shopify with a password.
3. How to change your Shopify store password
- In the Shopify admin area, navigate to Online Store -> Configurations.
- Go to the “Password Protection” section.
- Here you can set a new password and add a message that your visitors should find on the password page. If you don't want a message, simply leave this field blank.
- Then save.
